There are dozens of hair loss medications treatments in the market today but most of them are just ineffective. In fact, the American Hair Loss Association (AHLA) recommends that one should only use FDA approved products. Hair loss is a major disease for men and women today and finding a treatment that works is really very important. There are two significant hair loss medications that work, and are often used to complement a hair transplant treatment.
1. Propecia (Finasteride)
Propecia is available to men only by prescription. It is proven to slow or stop the progression of hair loss by lowering DHT levels. Propecia is most effective in crown hair loss. It is less effective in frontal loss. It has not been shown to be effective in the temples (sides of head forward of the ears). There has not been any noted difference in its performance in different ethnic groups. It prevented the on-set of hair loss in 86% of men taking the drug during clinical trials. 65% of these men experienced an increase in hair growth.
Please Note: Women should not take or handle Propecia tablets because it may cause birth defects. Because the extent of absorption through skin can not be measured easily, FDA’s guideline is not to handle it at all if you are a woman.
2. Rogaine (Minoxidil)
Minoxidil was the first hair loss treatment drug that was approved by the FDA for male baldness. It is available to men (2% and 5%) or women (2%) without a prescription. For years, the Minoxidil pill was used to treat high blood pressure. But a side effect of Minoxidil was hair growth in unexpected places such as on the back, hands and cheeks. Minoxidil was then made into a lotion and the last presentation (since 2007) is foam (5%) for men only used topically to the head on balding areas. Studies show that Minoxidil seems to work best on people under 30 years of age who have been losing their hair for less than 5 years. You can not reply on it for long-term results because once you stop using it, the positive effect will not continue.

Understanding The Causes Of Female Hair Loss
Although we may not really be aware of it, female hair loss is just as common as male hair loss. Yes, we do not really see bald women very often but the fact is that at some point in time women tend to lose their beautiful hair. In most cases, the causes of female hair loss is closely related to hormonal changes such as the rise of testosterone, found during menopause, diet, medicates and harsh hairstyling.
A hormone that directly targets the hair during menopause is progesterone. Progesterone levels drop because of lack of ovulation in the female’s body. It compensates by producing extra androstenedione, which hampers hair growth. Hair will usually go back to its original thickness after menopause, though. Many women find that childbirth is what caused their hair loss.
Two thirds (66%) of women will have some type of hair loss in their lives. Fifty percent of women get female-pattern baldness. Thinning usually appears around the ages of 25 to 30 or 40 to 50. It usually starts with the hair shaft becoming thinner and translucent. Then the hair will start to fall out of a rate that is higher than one hundred strands a day (50-100 is normal hair loss per day).
Fortunately, most secondary causes (Telogen effluvium) of female hair loss are temporary and the hair usually grows back. The bad news is that although the causes of female hair loss may be temporary, the effect of such hair loss can be quite devastating to women. To avoid hair loss, women should therefore understand the many causes of female hair loss and strive to avoid these causes to preserve their beautiful tresses.
Stress Can Cause Female Hair Loss
One of the most common causes of female hair loss is telogen effluvium, which can be brought about by traumatic experiences of the body such as severe infection, extreme stress, childbirth, severe malnutrition and the likes. According to experts, the shedding of hair can occur about three weeks after the stressful or traumatic experience on the body. In most cases, hair loss at this point can be mild to moderate. However, there are some women who do experience severe hair loss. The good news here is that the effect of these stressful or traumatic events on the body is transient, meaning, it does not really last long. A few weeks or months after the stressful or traumatic event, the body recovers and so does the hair. In most cases, the hair will grow back again within a few months.
Another common cause of female hair loss is traction alopecia, which is the result of too much styling, pulling and tight braiding of the hair. Braiding the hair tightly can weaken the foundation of the hair and may damage the scalp. To prevent such damage, it would be better to just simply wear your hair loose. If you must braid your hair, try not to pull it too tightly. You should also try to avoid constant styling of your hair. Yes, nicely styled hair can make you feel more beautiful and confident but it can also make you bald in the long run. Studies show that the harsh chemicals used in hair styling can damage your hair and your scalp.

If you are suffering from hair loss or baldness, then you are not alone. About 50% of men above 40 years old suffering from hair loss problems – and the current work 24×7 work routine and stress levels often accelerate hair loss.
The primary cause for hair loss in men and women is the Genetic Alopecia and the secondary causes are grouped as Telogen Effluvium.
The male pattern balding is mostly genetic and can be inherited from either the mother or father. Balding is triggered when the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) molecules chemically bond with special receptor sites on hair follicle cells. This causes the hair follicle to weaken (miniaturize) and eventually to fall.
Today there are new techniques in hair transplant surgery that promise natural results – especially when done by a specialist surgeon. As a result, we have observed that hair restoration has became one of the most requested treatments by men over the last 7 years.
What Causes Hair Loss In Men And Women?
No matter if it is male/female-pattern baldness or total baldness, called alopecia, most people will have some type of hair loss at one point or another in their lives. The causes are varied and can depend on many factors. Here are some of the more common factors so you can identify what may be causing your hair loss.
Common Secondary Causes (grouped as Telogen Effluvium)
Hair loss can occur from many secondary causes that most people don’t even think of. The most common is stress. Stress from work, a crash diet and illness also play a role.
Taking a new medication, such as high blood pressure drugs, birth control pills, antidepressants, and blood thinners, may make your hair fall out as well, so if it is three months after you started taking these pills (it will take you 3 months to notice a major change) and your hair is falling out, you may want to call your doctor. Hair loss can be caused by hormone changes such as low thyroid function.
A poor diet lacking in proteins and iron can be a problem and usually is the result of silly crash dieting or the latest fad diet. Anorexia and bulimia, two eating disorders can also be counted among the causes of hair loss, as can unexpected illnesses like the flu or even high fever. Surgery and medical treatments like chemotherapy play a part in hair loss but luckily some of that lost hair grows back eventually.
Two more secondary causes of hair loss include the brand of hair care products and chemicals you use in your hair or a scalp condition like ringworm. These two particular causes of hair loss are totally treatable and often reversible.
Hair Loss Causes In Men
Men generally lose their hair due to genetics and heredity or the causes above. It starts with thinning in the hairline or the crown and progresses over time. Following are some of the most common causes of hair loss.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Heredity is the underlying root of Androgenetic Alopecia and it occurs primarily in men, but some women have been known to get it too. Research your genetic history and you will likely find a few family members who have gone bald. Please note that the age at which you start to lose hair as well as how fast and even the pattern of loss is all linked to heredity.
Alopecia Areata
Graded as an autoimmune disease, Alopecia Areata does not have any particular underlying cause to attribute to your hair loss and most people that develop it are in good health. Among the causes of hair loss, Alopecia Areata is the most puzzling and doctors believe that genetics do play a part. Like with mononucleosis and other illnesses, perhaps all this disease needs is a trigger like a viral infection.

Hair grows in natural groups of 1 to 4 hairs, with an average of 2.2 hairs per group (the avg. depend on the ethnic group and on other factors), and these groups are called Follicular Units. Each Follicular Unit also contains sebaceous (oil) glands, nerves, a small muscle and occasional fine vellus hairs. It is a self-contained unit.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a technique that involves extraction of the follicular units from a patient’s donor area, usually the back or side of the head, using a small surgical instrument.
With the strip harvesting technique, the donor follicular units to be transplanted are removed along with the skin strip from the donor area. They are then harvested using stereoscopic microscopes to ensure that the follicular units remain intact in their original form and to prevent damage to individual hair follicles. The strip technique offers lower follicular damage and lower wounding in the donor area, and thereby reducing the total scarring produced. It also enables a patient to get much larger number of grafts to the balding areas during a given surgical session.
Since the follicular unit is a distinct anatomic and physiologic entity, preserving it during the graft dissection is essential to maximize growth. Therefore stereo-microscopes are used for dissecting the follicular units with great care and they are preserved in a special solution at a cold temperature until the surgeon is ready to insert the grafts to the recipient sites on the patient’s scalp.
In the FUE Technique, the surgeon extracts the follicular units from the scalp without cutting any strip, but only a very small round piece of tissue, about 0.9mm, which contains the hair follicle inside.

Body hair transplantation refers to using hair follicles from the body (chest, back, legs, etc) for hair transplants.
While some websites claim success with body hair transplantation, you have to be careful because it is very difficult to get natural look and density with body hair, because the body hair follicle is not as resilient as the scalp hair follicle.

In men, the sideburns can be pulled backwards and upwards, resulting in an unnatural appearance if appropriate techniques are not employed to address this issue. Achieving a natural appearance following surgery in men can be more challenging due to their hair-bearing preauricular (before the ear) skin. In both men and women, one of the signs of having had a facelift can be an earlobe which is pulled forwards and/or distorted.

Single hair-grafts have the finest and softest appearance. Although they do not provide same density as 2-3 hair’s graft do, they do provide the critical soft hairline that offers a good transition to thicker hair.

I am very satisfied with the results of my hair transplantation. Before committing to having surgery outside the US, I did due diligence, and spoke to several of your patients and reviewed as much information as possible about the procedure and your medical practice. All the information I found was very positive. I became convinced that I could obtain superior results at a superior price at your practice. Additionally, the trip served as a family vacation at the all inclusive resort associated with the practice.
For my family and myself it was a relaxing and enjoyable time. All expenses combined were much less than what I would have paid should I have had my procedure done in the US.

I am happy to say that as of now my hair is starting to come in. My question is this: Is it ok to use Rogaine even on the new transplanted hair area as well as the rest of the original areas? And if it is alright, is there anything I should expect or notice from use of the product?

Kim’s work looks just great; a couple of my filler sites are still quite bruised looking, but otherwise things are looking good on that. The transplant work is doing really well, healing nicely, etc - no problems. Tape is off, swelling gone, blah, blah, blah, great!
You mentioned pics of the filler work for Kim & I; how often and when would you like those. I recall you said monthly pics for my hair. I recall from one of our early emails that you said Minoxidil 5% would be ok for my graft site; Is that correct and if so, when should I start it? I do have the stuff and would like to use it.
Daniel (he’s so wonderful) had me at the ticket counter by 9:55am. After getting my name and destination, the next words out of the guys mouth were, “your flight is delayed at least two hours”. It turned into a three hour delay - a five hour wait at the airport, so missed my connections and didn’t straggle into St. John until 9pm. A sour note on an otherwise perfect experience.

Te escribo para una vez mas dar las gracias por como nos han tratado y por el momento como va todo.
Respecto a mi caso va todo genial, ningún problema ningún dolor, la
verdad es que me encuentro tan bien que tengo que controlarme para no hacer vida totalmente normal (volver a hacer deporte ya, trabajar con toda normalidad etc) en verdad no me lo esperaba así.
Lo mas pesado si se le puede llamar así es lo del cuidado, lavar la
cabeza sobre todo que me lleva mucho tiempo ya que yo creo que lo hago con demasiado cuidado pero como he dicho antes bendito problema que solo sea ese.
Las curas de la cicatriz no me las hago yo voy acá a mi clínica para
que me las hagan (Felicita a la doctora y a su equipo de mi parte ya que la enfermera esta impresionada por los resultados, dice que pocas
veces a visto unos puntos así, que es perfecto), limpia y todo en orden.
Te pido un pequeño favor como voy a mi clínica, me han pedido detalles de la intervención ya que como me están curando tienen que anotarlo en el historial. No me han pedido nada concreto tan solo supongo que querrán saber detalles del corte y cuando me tienen que quitar las grapas etc, yo les he dicho que la retirada tiene que ser de 9 a 14 días como pone en el post-op pero me piden que por favor sea mas concreto ya que tienen que anotarlo al ser de una clínica privada para llevar al historial. Si por favor tu me mandaras los detalles de la intervención te lo agradecería mucho ya que me los esta pidiendo mi medico (burocracia ya sabes).

quitármela…han pasado solo tres días. Yo le escribo para primero que nada darle las mas sinceras gracias por la atención recibida durante mi cirugia el pasado lunes 26, todo el staff se porto super bien, tanto conmigo como con mi esposa. Tienen unas instalaciones muy bonitas y muy profesionales. Estoy seguro que yo recomendare a mas personas a ir a donde la doctora Alba Reyes en un futuro.
Sobre el “refund” que habiamos hablado quiero dejarle saber que no estoy interesado en el mismo, por lo tanto eso deja sin efecto el que yo deposite la cantidad de (reserved) en la cuenta de Citibank, ya que se pago a traves de la ATH (tarjeta de debito).

I arrived back at my home on Saturday, June 25 after being treated to such a pleasurable experience in the Dominican Republic.
Since the age of 22 I have toiled with the problem of male pattern baldness and thinning hair. Q1. Is hair transplant really effective in reversing baldness?
Yes. Hair transplant surgery has been successfully carried out over the last 35 years. It is a recognized medical procedure in the medical profession. The only variable factor is the resulting quality. The first techniques used (still used by some surgeons), gave the baby doll look, with hair growing in small clumps. But the latest advances in the use of micro grafts (follicular units), used in our institute have dramatically improved the results of hair transplant surgery. Our institute guarantees the results of the procedure as long as the patient follows the pre and post -operative instructions.
Q2. What are micro and mini grafts?
Micrografts are parts of the scalp that contain one, two or three follicular units. Mini grafts contain from four to eight capillary follicles. These small units of hair allow the creation of a natural appearance replacing the baby doll look, or the toothbrush look that has been thus far associated with hair transplant surgery. Dr. Alba Reyes places micro grafts of one to three hairs in small receptive incisions (0.5mm-0.9mm), along the scalp, generally along the hairline to give a natural and attractive look. With this technique, as well as the expertise and the unique artistic approach of Dr. Alba Reyes Sagiv, a natural appearance is achieved.
Q3. What are megasessions and how do they work?
Megasessions and SuperMegasessions are surgical procedures in the restoration of hair, where a large number of micro grafts are transplanted in a single surgical procedure (in case of a SuperMegasession as many as 7000-10000 hair follicles are transplanted). Dr. Alba Reyes has reached the conclusion that for most individuals, megasessions would be the best option for her patients. A SuperMegasession procedure could apply on fewer individuals because it requires an excellent donor zone in order to obtain a bigger amount of follicles.
Q4. What would be better for me: a Megasession or a small hair transplant procedure?
Some surgeons may suggest their patients to have few smaller procedures instead of one big procedure as the cost per small procedure is less expensive (with those surgeons that are charging according to the number of grafts) — and this may look attractive. But once you evaluate such offers, you will understand that it may be a marketing trick to attract patients (with a low fee per procedure) but in reality it may not be the best option because it would require you to have more procedures and more idle-days (meaning losing more working days) in order to achieve the same result that another patient could receive in just one Megasession.

To be a good candidate for a hair transplant, the determining factors include the amount of grafts necessary to produce the results that you desire, availability and density of hair follicles in the donor area, hair color, skin color, hair texture and a predicted future loss of hair. Virtually anybody (men and women) with a degree of hair loss can be a patient.

Q9. What can be expected after hair transplant surgery?
The post-operative course will depend on adherence to the instructions given after surgery. Small scabs will form on the scalp at the graft sites. Generally speaking, these scabs disappear in 4-7days. Shampooing should be resumed 24 hours after surgery. The suture (stitch) or staplers used in the donor area are undetectable as it is completely covered by your existing hair.
It is advisable to take at least one day off work after surgery. A baseball type cap can be worn according to specific instruction after surgery. Patients should avoid strenuous physical activity for at least five days after surgery. Typically the grafted hair will shed in 2-6 weeks. New growth will begin in 3-4 months, length will increase approximately 1/2 inch per month, hair structure and volume will increase up to 18 months.
Q10. How painful is a hair transplant treatment?
Most people are surprised at how little pain there is during the procedure. Some discomfort is to be expected as the anesthetic is injected into the scalp. Once the skin is anesthetized, there is no pain.
Q11. What will it look like after the procedure?
The grafts form small scabs in the days after the procedure. If one has enough surrounding hair, these scabs can be camouflaged with creative styling. If not, the small scabs may be visible but do not attract much attention. By keeping the scalp moist, the scabs usually come off in about a week or so.
Q12. At what age should I consider a hair transplant?
Hair loss is a problem that continues throughout life. Dr Alba Reyes Sagiv suggests that you deal with the problem early, before it becomes more obvious. An early start allows the surgeon to hide or camouflage the work while the transplanted hair gradually grows, unobserved. There is no age limit.

Q13. Can my hair transplants fall out after some time?
No. The transplanted hair is taken from the donor zone where the hair is permanent - usually at the back and lateral part of the head, and this hair is resistant to the effects of DHT, which causes balding. Therefore, the transplanted hair will continue to maintain its resistance to DHT and it will not fall unless in a rare case where due to some other reason/disease/event, you lose all your hair, including in the donor zone.
Q14. When can I go back to work?
Depending on the type of procedure you have undergone, and the type of work you do, it is often possible to go back to your office 1-2 days after the procedure. Your hair restoration surgeon will discuss this with you during the consultation, and advise you how many days you should take-off from your routine work.
Q15. Now that Propecia (Finasteride) is available, does it mean that hair transplants are not necessary anymore?
Although it has been proved that Propecia and Rogaine can make some of your lost hair grow again, it cannot restore all of your lost hair. It has been demonstrated that neither product can revive hair in the frontal area, the hairline, the temporal areas or the lateral areas of your head, which are the areas of concern for most people. It seems that the main benefit of these treatments is that they can delay or slow down hair loss in some areas of the head. Dr Alba Reyes Sagiv believes that both Propecia and Rogaine can be part of a very effective hair restoration program.
Q16. If I smoke regularly, does it have any effect the success of hair transplant?
Yes. There is a negative effect of smoking on the success of your hair transplant procedure because the nicotine from smoking constricts the blood vessels, which means reduced blood flow to the scalp. The carbon monoxide of the smoke decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. These factors can result in poor wound-healing after a hair transplant and can increase the chance of scarring in some cases. Therefore, as a precaution, you should avoid smoking for at least a few days before and a few days after the hair transplant procedure - the longer you avoid smoking, the better your healing process.
